Effect of climate seasonality and vegetation cover on floral resource selection by two stingless bee species

چکیده
The response of two stingless bees (Tetragonisca angustula and Melipona eburnea) to changes in vegetation cover was evaluated on seasonal spatial scales. Seasonal variation analysed for 15 months, with monthly melitopalinological assessments hives located three different covers: forests, fallows, grasslands, the Colombian Central Cordillera. Fallows, an intermediate disturbance degree, presented highest pollen taxa richness both bee species (33 40 M. eburnea T. angustula, respectively). Both a high preference plant families Melastomataceae, Sapindaceae, Peraceae. Miconia minutiflora Mi. prasina (Melastomataceae) were most selected species, alternation their use between dry wet seasons. Clethra spp., Pera arborea, Ilex laureola also highly by species. showed higher values during season, when largest number flowered. Despite being polylectic, periods, which reflected greater amplitude trophic niche compared eburnea. typical plants forest environments, enhancing meliponiculture as economically sustainable practice that can promote conservation maintenance interactions.

Bee nutrition and floral resource restoration.
Bee-population declines are linked to nutritional shortages caused by land-use intensification, which reduces diversity and abundance of host-plant species. Bees require nectar and pollen floral resources that provide necessary carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and micronutrients for survival, reproduction, and resilience to stress. However, nectar and pollen nutritional quality varies widely am...
متن کاملEffects of stingless bee and honey bee propolis on four species of bacteria.
We examined the antibacterial activities of several types of propolis, including Africanized honey bee green propolis and propolis produced by meliponini bees. The antibacterial activity of green propolis against Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus aureus was superior to that of Melipona quadrifasciata and Scaptotrigona sp propolis. Only two samples of propolis (green propolis and Scaptotrigo...
متن کاملNatural selection on floral morphology can be influenced by climate.
Climate has the potential to influence evolution, but how it influences the strength or direction of natural selection is largely unknown. We quantified the strength of selection on four floral traits of the subalpine herb Ipomopsis sp. in 10 years that differed in precipitation, causing extreme temporal variation in the date of snowmelt in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The chosen floral traits...
